SAVE OUR FARM YOUTH (SOFY)
Save Our Farm Youth (SOFY) Day Camp was started in 1995 as a joint venture between Avera Rural Health Institute, South Dakota CARES, and SDSU Cooperative Extension Service. This program works to reduce the incidence of agriculture-related injuries, illness and deaths of young people by increasing the awareness of the potential dangers associated with specific farm and ranch practices.
Nineteen modules have been created to show youth, ages 5 through 15, first-hand the dangers one can encounter on a farm. These day camps are designed to teach basic safety practices to farm and urban youth. The camps are planned by local volunteers and conducted by county extension workers.
Approximately 40 camps are held, every year, throughout South Dakota. During 2009, 5000 participants took part in the SOFY program. Along with the safety information received at the camps, these youths went home with valuable health information, t-shirts, and a greater sense about the environment in which they live.
